Signs of Gastric Ulcers in Horses and How to Treat Them
Gastric ulcers are more common in horses than you might think—especially performance horses or those under stress. If your horse seems off, ulcers could be the hidden cause. At Southcentral Veterinary Services, we’re here to help you recognize the signs and treat them effectively.
Common Signs of Gastric Ulcers
-
Decreased appetite or picky eating
-
Weight loss or poor body condition
-
Girthiness or sensitivity when saddling
-
Changes in attitude or performance
-
Teeth grinding or frequent colic episodes
If you notice any of these signs, it’s worth scheduling a gastric evaluation.
What Causes Ulcers?
Ulcers form when stomach acid damages the lining of the stomach. This often happens in horses that:
-
Go long periods without forage
-
Are in high-intensity training
-
Travel frequently or experience stress
-
Are on NSAIDs for extended periods
Diagnosing and Treating Ulcers
The only definitive way to diagnose ulcers is via gastroscopy (a camera exam of the stomach). Treatment usually involves omeprazole, a medication that reduces stomach acid, along with management changes like free-choice hay, stress reduction, and turnout time.
