Managing Equine Metabolic Syndrome: Nutrition and Exercise Tips
Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS) is becoming more common, especially in easy keepers and certain breeds like ponies, Morgans, and Arabians. If your horse is struggling with weight gain, insulin resistance, or laminitis, EMS could be the reason. At Southcentral Veterinary Services, we believe that education and proactive care are the best tools for managing this condition.
What Is Equine Metabolic Syndrome?
EMS is a hormonal disorder similar to Type 2 diabetes in people. Affected horses often have trouble processing sugars and starches, leading to high insulin levels and fat deposits—especially along the crest of the neck, shoulders, and rump. EMS also increases the risk of painful laminitis (inflammation of the tissues in the hoof).
Recognizing the Signs
Some of the most common signs of EMS include:
-
Obesity or abnormal fat deposits
-
Frequent or recurring laminitis
-
Difficulty losing weight despite restricted feed
-
Lethargy or low exercise tolerance
If you notice these signs, it’s important to have your veterinarian evaluate your horse and run appropriate diagnostics.
Nutrition: What to Feed and What to Avoid
Managing EMS starts with diet. The goal is to reduce sugar and starch intake while providing enough fiber and nutrients.
Do:
-
Feed low-NSC (non-structural carbohydrate) hay
-
Soak hay to remove excess sugars
-
Use a vitamin/mineral balancer to ensure nutrient needs are met
-
Offer slow-feed hay nets to mimic natural grazing behavior
Avoid:
-
Grain and sweet feeds
-
Pasture grazing during high-sugar times (early morning, spring or fall flush)
-
Treats with molasses, apples, or carrots in large amounts
Exercise: Move That Metabolism
Physical activity helps improve insulin sensitivity and encourages weight loss. Even light, consistent work like walking or longeing can make a big difference. Work with your vet to create a safe exercise plan, especially if your horse is recovering from laminitis.
