What is TPLO Surgery?

TPLO (Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy) is a surgical procedure used to stabilize the knee after a cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) rupture. The CCL plays a key role in keeping the knee joint stable during movement. When it tears, the joint becomes unstable, leading to pain, inflammation, and progressive joint damage.

Instead of repairing the ligament directly, TPLO surgery changes how the knee functions. The procedure involves carefully adjusting the angle of the tibia so the joint remains stable during weight-bearing, even without an intact ligament. A surgical plate and screws secure the bone in place as it heals.

At our animal hospital, TPLO is the most commonly performed orthopedic procedure. We follow consistent, proven protocols designed to promote reliable healing and strong functional outcomes. In addition to TPLO surgery for dogs, we evaluate select feline cases where this approach may be appropriate based on size, activity level, and joint stability.

Ideal TPLO Surgery Candidates

Determining whether TPLO is the right option depends on the individual patient. We assess each case carefully, considering both clinical findings and lifestyle factors. Common candidates for TPLO surgery include:

  • Dogs with cranial cruciate ligament rupture
  • Active, medium to large breed dogs
  • Pets with partial tears and progressive lameness
  • Patients needing long-term joint stability
  • Pets at risk of injury in the opposite limb (contralateral planning)
  • Cases where conservative management has not improved mobility

If there is uncertainty about whether a case is surgical, we are available to review radiographs and discuss options with both pet owners and referring veterinarians.

TPLO Surgery Recovery

Recovery after TPLO surgery is gradual and requires consistency. Many pets begin using the leg within a few weeks, but full healing takes time and guided care. Typical recovery milestones include:
